"Lincoln theorized that allowing the Southern states to secede might cause a rash of copycat secessions. But this never happened, either in the United States or anywhere else. Even if it had, it would have been beneficial for the same reasons just described. Multiples secessions (by the California Republic, for example) would have exerted even greater (and much needed) competitive pressures on the central state and forced it to comply more with the will of the people and the letter of the Constitution."
